PFAS vs. PFOS

PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) and PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonate) are both types of synthetic chemicals that have been widely used in a variety of industrial and consumer applications.

PFAS is a broad term used to describe a family of chemicals that have strong carbon-fluorine bonds. Overall, while PFAS and PFOS are related chemicals, PFOS is considered to be a more concerning compound due to its higher toxicity and persistence in the environment.
